A Beginner-Friendly Adventure: My Scenic Hike to Mount Hapunang Banoi, Rodriguez, Rizal
Discovering a Hidden Gem in Rizal
As someone who considers myself an occasional hiker rather than a hardcore mountaineer, I am always searching for trails that offer rewarding views without being too physically overwhelming. One of the most memorable hikes I have experienced so far is Mount Hapunang Banoi in Rodriguez, Rizal. Known for its picturesque ridges, grassland trails, and stunning panoramic views, this mountain perfectly balances adventure and accessibility.
Mount Hapunang Banoi stands at approximately 517 meters above sea level and is part of the rugged Sierra Madre mountain range. The mountain is well-known among beginner and intermediate hikers because of its scenic limestone formations, rolling hills, and open landscapes that provide uninterrupted views of the surrounding mountains. Based on my experience, I would confidently declare its difficulty level as 4 out of 10, making it ideal for beginners or casual hikers who want a fulfilling outdoor experience.
Trail Experience and Difficulty Level
The trail to Mount Hapunang Banoi is a mixture of grassland, forested sections, and limestone rock formations. As an occasional hiker, I found the trail very manageable. The initial part of the hike starts with gradual ascents that allow your body to warm up slowly. The trail is well-established and fairly easy to follow, which makes it beginner-friendly.
As I continued the hike, I encountered several moderate ascents. These sections required more effort, especially when climbing over limestone rocks and navigating grassy slopes. However, these parts were never too technical or dangerous. There were a few sections where I needed to use my hands for balance, but overall, the trail remained safe and enjoyable.
The open grassland areas were both a blessing and a challenge. The views were breathtaking, but since there were fewer shaded areas, hiking under the sun could become tiring. I highly recommend bringing enough water, wearing sun protection, and starting early in the morning to avoid the midday heat.
On average, it took me around 3 to 4 hours to complete the hike (round trip). This includes rest stops, photo opportunities, and enjoying the scenery at the summit. Faster hikers might complete it sooner, while beginners may take slightly longer.
The Rewarding Summit View
Reaching the summit of Mount Hapunang Banoi was one of the most satisfying moments of the hike. The summit offers a wide, open space where hikers can relax and appreciate the stunning 360-degree view of the Sierra Madre mountain range.
From the top, I could see layers of mountains stretching endlessly across the horizon. The rolling hills and dramatic limestone ridges created a breathtaking landscape that made the hike completely worthwhile. The fresh air and peaceful surroundings provided a perfect escape from city life. It was the kind of view that makes you pause, breathe deeply, and simply enjoy the beauty of nature.
The summit is also an excellent spot for photography, picnics, and bonding with fellow hikers. I spent a good amount of time just sitting and admiring the scenery before preparing for the descent.
How to Get to Mount Hapunang Banoi
Mount Hapunang Banoi is located near Wawa Dam in Rodriguez, Rizal, which serves as the common jump-off point for the hike. Getting there is fairly convenient, especially for hikers coming from Metro Manila.
Here is how I got there:
I traveled to Cubao and rode a jeepney or UV Express bound for Rodriguez (Montalban).
From the town proper, I took a tricycle going to Wawa Dam.
Upon arrival, I registered at the designated registration area before starting the hike.
The registration process was simple, and local guides are also available if needed. Although the trail is beginner-friendly, hiring a guide is recommended for first-time visitors to ensure safety and proper navigation.

Mount Hapunang Banoi offers more than just hiking. During my visit, I discovered several activities that make the trip even more enjoyable.

My Overall Hiking Experience
Mount Hapunang Banoi gave me one of the most balanced hiking experiences I have had as an occasional hiker. The trail was challenging enough to feel rewarding but not too difficult to become discouraging. The combination of open grasslands, limestone formations, and sweeping mountain views made every step worthwhile.
Declaring its difficulty level as 4 out of 10 feels accurate based on my experience. It is accessible to beginners, yet still offers excitement and adventure. The estimated 3 to 4 hours trail completion makes it perfect for a day hike without requiring overnight camping or advanced mountaineering skills.
For anyone looking to start their hiking journey or simply enjoy a scenic outdoor escape near Metro Manila, Mount Hapunang Banoi is definitely worth visiting. My trip reminded me that sometimes, the best adventures are those that allow you to reconnect with nature while staying within your comfort zone.
