A Peaceful Escape Close to the Metro

Living near the bustling city often makes us crave a quick escape into nature, and that is exactly what my fiancé and I found when we decided to hike Mount Mapalad in Tanay, Rizal. Known for its beginner-friendly trail, breathtaking rolling hills, and relaxing atmosphere, Mount Mapalad offered us a refreshing adventure that perfectly blended challenge and leisure.

From the moment we arrived, we felt that Mount Mapalad lived up to its name, which translates to “lucky” or “fortunate.” The mountain has a welcoming ambiance that makes hikers of all skill levels feel comfortable. The cool breeze, wide open grasslands, and scenic mountain views created a calming environment that allowed us to temporarily forget the stress of everyday life. Unlike crowded tourist destinations, Mount Mapalad provides a serene and peaceful vibe, making it ideal for couples, families, or groups of friends who simply want to enjoy nature together.

How We Got There

One of the things we appreciated most about Mount Mapalad is its accessibility. Since my fiancé and I were coming from Metro Manila, the travel time was manageable and convenient for a day hike or overnight camping trip.

We started our journey early in the morning to avoid heavy traffic. From Metro Manila, we drove toward Marcos Highway and continued heading to Tanay, Rizal. The drive itself was already part of the adventure. As we moved farther away from the city, we noticed the gradual transition from urban landscapes to lush greenery and scenic mountain roads. The refreshing sight of trees and rolling hills instantly boosted our excitement.

Upon reaching Barangay Cuyambay, we registered at the designated registration area. The process was organized and straightforward, with local guides available for those who wanted assistance. We appreciated how the local community manages tourism responsibly, ensuring the safety of hikers and the preservation of the mountain’s natural beauty.

The jump-off point was easy to locate, and after a short preparation and briefing, we began our hike feeling energized and eager to explore.

The Hiking Experience and Ambiance

The trail to Mount Mapalad’s summit is considered beginner-friendly, which made it perfect for us to enjoy without feeling overly exhausted. However, despite being relatively easy, the hike was still engaging and rewarding.

The trail mostly consists of open grasslands and gently sloping ridges. Walking through these vast green landscapes felt incredibly refreshing. My fiancé and I enjoyed the unobstructed views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The wide trails allowed us to walk side by side, chat comfortably, and take plenty of photos without worrying about difficult terrain.

One of the highlights of the hike was the constant presence of cool mountain winds. The breeze helped regulate the temperature, making the hike more enjoyable even under the sun. The peaceful ambiance was enhanced by the sound of rustling grass and distant birds, creating a relaxing and almost meditative experience for both of us.

As we approached the summit, we were greeted by stunning panoramic views. The rolling hills stretched as far as we could see, creating a picturesque landscape that looked almost surreal. It was one of those moments where we simply paused, admired the scenery, and felt grateful to experience such natural beauty together.

What We Saw Along the Way

Mount Mapalad is known for its scenic landscapes, and it certainly did not disappoint us. Throughout the hike, we encountered breathtaking viewpoints where we could see the Sierra Madre mountain range, nearby peaks, and expansive grasslands.

The summit area itself offered a spacious resting spot where hikers can relax, eat meals, or simply enjoy the view. We noticed several campers setting up tents, which made us consider returning someday for an overnight camping experience. We learned that Mount Mapalad is famous for its sunrise and sea of clouds view, especially during favorable weather conditions. Although we visited during the daytime, the beauty of the mountain was still remarkable.

Another thing we appreciated was the well-maintained trail. The route was clean and organized, which reflects the community’s effort to preserve the environment. The locals also sell refreshments and basic supplies, which adds convenience for hikers while supporting the local economy.

Activities We Enjoyed

Aside from hiking, Mount Mapalad offers several enjoyable activities. My fiancé and I spent time taking photographs because the mountain provides numerous Instagram-worthy spots. The rolling hills and wide open sky created perfect backdrops for memorable couple photos.

We also enjoyed having a small picnic at the summit. Sharing food while surrounded by nature made the experience feel extra special and intimate. Many hikers also engage in camping, sunrise viewing, and relaxation activities such as yoga or meditation due to the mountain’s calm atmosphere.

For adventure enthusiasts, the ridge walks provide exciting yet safe opportunities to explore different viewpoints. The trail encourages hikers to move at their own pace, allowing everyone to fully appreciate the experience without pressure.

Our Overall Experience

Hiking Mount Mapalad became a memorable bonding experience for my fiancé and I. The mountain’s beginner-friendly trail, stunning landscapes, and peaceful environment made it an ideal destination for couples seeking both adventure and relaxation.

The accessibility of the location, combined with the welcoming local community, made our trip smooth and enjoyable. Mount Mapalad offers the perfect balance between challenge and leisure, making it suitable for first-time hikers as well as experienced adventurers who simply want a relaxing trek.

Our journey to Mount Mapalad reminded us how important it is to occasionally step away from busy routines and reconnect with nature and with each other. The mountain gave us not just scenic views but also meaningful moments that we will always treasure.

Without a doubt, Mount Mapalad is a destination we would gladly visit again, perhaps next time to experience its famous sunrise and sea of clouds. For anyone looking for a refreshing outdoor adventure near Metro Manila, Mount Mapalad in Tanay, Rizal is definitely worth exploring.

Ugbo 2.0: Our Street Food Odyssey in Sampaloc, Manila Philippines

When we first heard whispers of FUSION ALLEY Food Park Sampaloc, famously dubbed “Ugbo 2.0,” we were in different parts of Manila—some in the University Belt, others just passing by on errands—but all of us curious about the hype. The original Ugbo in Tondo had long been a food pilgrimage for adventurous eaters and night market lovers alike, with its endless rows of stalls, grilled skewers, exotic soups, and cheeky sweet treats. Now, this spirited concept has been reimagined closer to campus life, right between P. Noval and P. Campa streets in Sampaloc, just a short walk from UST and the rest of the academic hustle. From the outset, Ugbo 2.0 felt like a celebration of Filipino street food culture—but with its own Sampaloc personality. The streets come alive as the sun dips below the Manila skyline, and the aroma of sizzling grills and sweet fruit shakes fills the late-afternoon air. The first thing that strikes us when we walk along the vendors’ lane is the diversity of offerings: fami...
