A Cozy Baguio Favorite: Dining at The Grumpy Joe Restaurant

When you think of Baguio City — cool mountain breezes, pine-scented streets, and cozy cafés that beckon you in from the cool air — it’s no surprise that one restaurant consistently gets buzz from locals and tourists alike: The Grumpy Joe. On our recent trip with my fiancé and three friends, we carved out time to experience this iconic eatery that every Baguio food lover seems to mention. Spoiler: the food lives up to the hype — and yes, it’s pricier than many places in the city, but in our experience, it’s worth every bite.

How to Get There: A Little Adventure in Baguio

We were staying near Burnham Park, the heart of Baguio, and getting to Grumpy Joe was part of the fun.

By Jeepney: From Burnham Park, we hopped on a jeepney bound for Mines View or Scout Barrio. These routes pass near Upper Session Road — just tell the driver you’re headed to Grumpy Joe and they’ll let you off close by. It’s easy, cheap, and gives you a little city tour along the way.

By Taxi or Grab: If you prefer comfort, a short taxi or Grab ride from the city center will bring you right to the restaurant’s doorstep on Upper Session Road — ideal if you’re carrying camera gear or bulky baggage.

Once you arrive, the charming exterior of Grumpy Joe — a bit of vintage Baguio charm with warm lighting and a welcoming vibe — makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto a secret gathering place rather than just another restaurant.

First Impressions: Ambiance That Wraps You In Warmth

From the moment we stepped in, the ambiance struck us as homey and inviting. The interior feels spacious yet cozy, with wooden accents and relaxed seating that encourage you to settle in for conversation and laughter. There’s a relaxed chatter in the air, punctuated with the smells of cheesy pizza and sizzling pasta — the kind of atmosphere that makes you forget you’re in a bustling city.

Because this location on Upper Session Road takes over a much larger space than the old Leonard Wood Road branch did, we didn’t feel cramped even when the restaurant started to fill up around dinnertime. Natural light streams through windows, and the casual, cheerful décor keeps the vibe comfortable and unpretentious — perfect for group dinners or chill meals after exploring the city.

Note: There can be a wait during peak hours, so going a little earlier (around 5PM) or later (after 7PM) helps beat the queue.

What We Ate: Comfort Food That Hits Just Right

Now for the best part — the food. It’s no secret among Baguio regulars that Grumpy Joe serves generous portions, and we found ourselves sharing plates across the table, swapping forks, and laughing as everyone declared their favorite dish.

Here’s a taste of what we tried:

Pizza — Thick, Cheesy, and Perfect for Sharing

We had a few different pizzas, and the standout for the group was the rich Aloha 5 Cheese — a deliciously indulgent mix of cheeses with a slightly sweet kick from pineapple bits. The crust was bready and thick, exactly the kind of pizza you want to pull apart with friends.

Pastas — Generous and Flavorful

The Spicy Seafood Pesto was a crowd favorite among us — heaping with shrimp, squid, and mussels, the pesto had great balance and just enough spice to keep you coming back for another forkful.

Pasta portions here aren’t stingy; they’re sharing-sized, perfect to pair with a pizza slice or two.

Wings & Fries — Crispy Comfort

We also enjoyed the classic wings (with honey garlic and buffalo sauce options) alongside crunchy mojo fries. They were fun to nibble on while catching up with friends after a day of city walks.

Drinks & Sides

Refreshing iced teas and smoothies complemented the savory dishes well — a welcome balance after spicy bites.

Price note: Compared to other local restaurants in Baguio, you’ll definitely pay a bit more per dish here — pizzas and pastas typically run higher than your casual cafés or hole-in-the-wall spots around town. But with the quality, portion size, and overall experience, we all agreed it felt like a fair deal for a special night out.

Service & Practical Tips

One of the things we loved was how friendly and attentive the staff were. Even when the restaurant filled up, servers stayed upbeat and helpful. That said, service can slow a bit when it gets super busy, so patience (and maybe ordering a round of drinks while you wait) goes a long way.

A couple of practical notes if you go:

Parking can be limited, so if you’re driving, consider arriving early.

Cash is often preferred, so bring enough just in case card machines are busy.

No reservations — first come, first served; go off-peak if you’re in a rush.

Final Verdict: Worth the Trip — and the Price Tag

Overall, our evening at Grumpy Joe was one of the highlights of our Baguio food adventure. From the first laughter-filled bite of pizza to the last spoonful of pesto pasta, the experience was one of comfort, flavor, and good company.

Sure, the price tag is a bit higher than typical Baguio eats, but when food is this satisfying — generous portions, well-executed comfort classics, and ambiance that invites conversation long into the night — it feels like a treat that’s worth it.

If you find yourself wandering around Baguio with friends or loved ones and craving a lively, delicious meal that feeds both your appetite and your spirit, make sure you put The Grumpy Joe on your list. You might just find yourself planning your next visit before the bill even hits the table.

Cheerio!
