Mount Manabu: A Beginner-Friendly Hiking Adventure in Santo Tomas, Batangas

If you're looking for a mountain that offers a rewarding hiking experience without requiring advanced mountaineering skills, Mount Manabu in Santo Tomas, Batangas should be at the top of your list. My fiancée and I enjoy hiking occasionally, and we always look for destinations that strike a balance between challenge and relaxation. Mt. Manabu turned out to be exactly that—a refreshing escape from the city, surrounded by lush forests, cool mountain air, and breathtaking views.

Located in the Malipunyo Mountain Range, Mount Manabu rises to approximately 760 meters (2,490 feet) above sea level. The mountain's name is believed to have come from the Filipino phrase "Mataas na Bundok," which was shortened over time to "Manabu." Although it is considered a minor climb, it has become one of the most popular hiking destinations in Batangas because of its beginner-friendly trail, scenic summit, and welcoming local community.

One of the things we appreciated most about Mt. Manabu was how accessible it is. Since my fiancée and I are only occasional hikers, we wanted a mountain that wouldn't leave us completely exhausted by the end of the day. Fortunately, Mt. Manabu is known for being one of the easiest day hikes near Metro Manila while still providing the feeling of a genuine mountain adventure. Most hikers can reach the summit in about two to three hours at a comfortable pace, making it perfect for beginners or couples looking for an active weekend getaway.

How to Get There

Traveling to Mount Manabu is relatively straightforward.

If you're coming from Metro Manila by public transportation, ride a bus bound for Santo Tomas, Batangas. Once you arrive in Santo Tomas, take a tricycle going to Brgy. Sta. Cruz (Sulok Jump-off Point), where hikers register before beginning the trek. Private vehicles can also easily reach the jump-off point through Google Maps or Waze, and parking is usually available near the registration area. Registration fees and guide services may vary depending on local regulations, so it's always a good idea to prepare cash and check the latest requirements before your trip.

The Hiking Experience

From the moment we started hiking, we immediately noticed how different Mt. Manabu felt compared to mountains with exposed trails. Much of the trail is covered by dense forest, providing natural shade almost the entire way. Even though we visited during a warm day, the canopy kept the hike cool and comfortable.

The trail itself is well established. Along the way, we crossed small streams, walked through woodland paths, and gradually climbed several uphill sections. There are a few steep portions near the summit, but nothing overly technical. As occasional hikers, we found ourselves taking short breaks to enjoy the peaceful surroundings rather than because the trail was overwhelmingly difficult.

One pleasant surprise was the hospitality of the locals. Several resting spots along the trail sell refreshments, and some hikers even get to enjoy the famous Alamid (civet) coffee, which has become one of Mt. Manabu's unique attractions. Sharing a warm cup of coffee while surrounded by nature made the experience even more memorable.

Birdsong accompanies much of the hike, while towering hardwood trees create a calming atmosphere rarely experienced in the city. Unlike highly commercialized tourist destinations, Mt. Manabu still feels peaceful and close to nature.

Reaching the Summit

After a steady climb, we finally reached the summit. Standing there, we immediately understood why so many hikers recommend this mountain.

The summit features an iconic cross surrounded by open grasslands, creating a dramatic contrast to the shaded forest below. On a clear day, panoramic views stretch across Batangas, Laguna, and neighboring mountain ranges. We could clearly see Mount Makiling, Mount Malipunyo, and even parts of Mount Maculot in the distance. The rolling green mountains seemed endless, while patches of farmland and nearby towns added beautiful texture to the landscape.

The cool breeze at the summit was incredibly refreshing after the hike. My fiancée and I sat quietly for several minutes, simply appreciating the view. Moments like these remind us why we enjoy hiking even if we don't do it every weekend. There's something deeply satisfying about earning a beautiful view through your own effort.

If the weather cooperates, sunrise hikes are especially rewarding. Early morning light paints the surrounding mountains in shades of gold, while occasional sea clouds create a dreamlike atmosphere. During cooler months, light fog sometimes drifts across the summit, adding a mystical charm to the experience.

Difficulty Rating

On my personal scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most difficult, I would rate Mount Manabu a 3 out of 10.

Here's why:

  • The trail is beginner-friendly and clearly defined.
  • Most of the hike is shaded by trees.
  • There are only a few moderately steep sections.
  • No technical climbing or ropes are required.
  • The hike can usually be completed comfortably within half a day.

However, the difficulty can increase during the rainy season. Muddy trails become slippery, and stream crossings require extra caution. Proper hiking shoes with good traction are highly recommended if you're planning to hike after rain.

Things to Bring

To fully enjoy your hike, it's best to bring:

  • At least 1–2 liters of water
  • Trail snacks
  • Comfortable hiking shoes
  • Light rain jacket
  • Hat and sunscreen
  • Camera or smartphone
  • Small first aid kit
  • Extra shirt for the trip home

Because the trail is mostly shaded, carrying heavy gear isn't necessary unless you plan to camp.

Final Thoughts

Our hike to Mount Manabu reminded us that you don't have to conquer extremely difficult mountains to experience adventure. Sometimes, the best trips are the ones that allow you to enjoy nature at your own pace.

As occasional hikers, my fiancée and I found Mt. Manabu to be the perfect destination. It challenged us just enough to make reaching the summit rewarding, yet it never felt intimidating. The forest trails, friendly locals, fresh mountain air, and spectacular panoramic views combined to create an unforgettable experience.

Whether you're planning your very first hike or simply looking for a relaxing outdoor escape near Metro Manila, Mount Manabu is an excellent choice. Its accessibility, beginner-friendly trail, and stunning scenery make it one of Batangas' finest hiking destinations. We left the mountain tired but happy, already talking about which mountain we should climb next—and that's probably the best compliment we can give to any hiking destination.

Cheerio!

Ugbo 2.0: Our Street Food Odyssey in Sampaloc, Manila Philippines

When we first heard whispers of FUSION ALLEY Food Park Sampaloc, famously dubbed “Ugbo 2.0,” we were in different parts of Manila—some in the University Belt, others just passing by on errands—but all of us curious about the hype. The original Ugbo in Tondo had long been a food pilgrimage for adventurous eaters and night market lovers alike, with its endless rows of stalls, grilled skewers, exotic soups, and cheeky sweet treats. Now, this spirited concept has been reimagined closer to campus life, right between P. Noval and P. Campa streets in Sampaloc, just a short walk from UST and the rest of the academic hustle. From the outset, Ugbo 2.0 felt like a celebration of Filipino street food culture—but with its own Sampaloc personality. The streets come alive as the sun dips below the Manila skyline, and the aroma of sizzling grills and sweet fruit shakes fills the late-afternoon air. The first thing that strikes us when we walk along the vendors’ lane is the diversity of offerings: fami...
