Visiting Mount Gulugod Baboy in Mabini, Batangas: A Scenic Hike Perfect for Beginners

If you're looking for a mountain that offers breathtaking views without requiring an exhausting climb, Mount Gulugod Baboy in Mabini, Batangas should definitely be on your list. My fiancée and I have always enjoyed exploring destinations that combine nature, adventure, and beautiful scenery, and this mountain turned out to be one of our favorite day hikes. From its rolling grasslands to its panoramic summit overlooking Batangas Bay and nearby islands, Mount Gulugod Baboy offers an unforgettable experience for both first-time and experienced hikers.

Despite its funny name, which translates to "Pig's Spine" because of the shape of its ridgeline, Mount Gulugod Baboy is one of the most accessible hiking destinations in Southern Luzon. Standing at approximately 525 meters above sea level, it is considered one of the best beginner-friendly mountains in the Philippines. The mountain is located in Mabini, Batangas, a municipality also known for its world-class diving sites in Anilao.

Our adventure began early in the morning as we made our way to the jump-off point in Barangay Bagalangit. Registration was quick, and local guides were available for those who wanted assistance. The trail itself immediately gave us a glimpse of what was waiting ahead—green hills, fresh air, and a peaceful atmosphere far removed from the busy city.

One of the things we appreciated most was how gradual the ascent was. Unlike mountains with steep rock scrambling or technical trails, Mount Gulugod Baboy features well-established dirt paths and rolling hills. Along the way, we passed grazing cows, wide-open grasslands, and several scenic viewpoints that were perfect for taking breaks and snapping photos. Every few minutes, we found ourselves stopping to admire the scenery because each section of the trail revealed a different perspective of the surrounding coastline.

The hike itself is relatively short. Depending on your pace, reaching the summit usually takes between one and a half to three hours. Even though the trail is beginner-friendly, the tropical heat can make the climb more challenging, especially during midday. We highly recommend starting early in the morning to enjoy cooler temperatures and softer sunlight.

Trek Difficulty Rating

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the hardest, we would rate Mount Gulugod Baboy a 3 out of 10.

The trail is mostly gradual with only a few moderately steep sections. There are no technical climbs, ropes, or dangerous rock formations that require advanced hiking skills. Beginners, families, and even children with proper supervision can complete the hike comfortably. The biggest challenge isn't the terrain but rather the exposure to the sun, as much of the trail has very little tree cover. Bringing enough drinking water, sunscreen, a hat, and lightweight clothing makes the hike significantly more enjoyable.

The Scenic Summit Views

Reaching the summit was undoubtedly the highlight of our trip. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by an incredible 360-degree panoramic view that made every step worthwhile. Standing on top of the grassy ridge, we could see the sparkling waters of Balayan Bay and Batangas Bay stretching into the horizon. On clear days, nearby islands such as Sombrero Island and Maricaban Island are easily visible, while the Verde Island Passage creates an impressive backdrop of deep blue water.

Looking in another direction, we could see rolling hills blending into the coastline, with fishing villages scattered below. The peaceful landscape, combined with the cool mountain breeze, created a relaxing atmosphere that made us want to stay longer. It was the perfect place to sit down, enjoy a packed lunch, and simply appreciate nature.

The summit is also an excellent location for photography. Whether you're capturing wide landscape shots, drone footage (where permitted), or simply taking photos together, every angle seems postcard-worthy. During sunrise and sunset, the mountain transforms into an even more magical place as golden light covers the hills and reflects off the sea below.

More Than Just Hiking

While hiking is the main attraction, Mount Gulugod Baboy offers several other enjoyable activities.

One of the most popular is camping. Many visitors choose to spend the night near the summit to experience both sunset and sunrise. Camping allows hikers to enjoy cooler evening temperatures, star-filled skies, and spectacular morning views without feeling rushed.

Photography enthusiasts will also find endless opportunities throughout the trail. The rolling green hills resemble landscapes often associated with New Zealand, making the mountain a favorite destination for portrait sessions, engagement shoots, travel photography, and drone videography.

Birdwatching and nature appreciation are additional activities worth trying. The mountain's open grasslands and natural environment provide opportunities to observe local birds and appreciate the area's peaceful ecosystem.

Since Mount Gulugod Baboy is only a short drive from Anilao, many visitors combine their hike with water activities afterward. Anilao is internationally recognized as one of the Philippines' premier diving and snorkeling destinations. My fiancée and I loved the idea that a single trip could include both mountain hiking and relaxing by the sea. Several nearby resorts also offer swimming pools, beach access, kayaking, island hopping, snorkeling, scuba diving, and even introductory diving lessons for beginners.

Food trips are another enjoyable part of visiting Mabini. Small local restaurants and seaside eateries serve fresh seafood and traditional Batangas specialties, making it easy to end the adventure with a satisfying meal before heading home.

Helpful Tips for Future Visitors

To make the most of the experience, we recommend arriving early in the morning to avoid the intense afternoon heat. Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good traction, bring at least one to two liters of water per person, apply sunscreen, and wear a hat or cap since there is limited shade throughout the trail. Bringing a lightweight jacket is also useful if you're planning to stay for sunset or camp overnight, as temperatures can become cooler after dark.

Respecting nature is equally important. Carry your trash back down, stay on designated trails, and follow the guidance of local residents and tour guides to help preserve the beauty of the mountain.

Final Verdict

Overall, our visit to Mount Gulugod Baboy exceeded our expectations. It offered the perfect balance of adventure, relaxation, and stunning natural beauty without demanding an intense physical challenge. The easy trail makes it ideal for beginners, while the spectacular summit rewards even experienced hikers with unforgettable panoramic views of Batangas' coastline and islands.

With its gentle hiking trails, scenic grasslands, excellent camping opportunities, nearby beaches, and access to world-class snorkeling and diving in Anilao, Mount Gulugod Baboy is much more than just a hiking destination. Whether you're planning a day hike, a weekend camping trip, or a combined mountain-and-sea adventure, this hidden gem in Mabini, Batangas is absolutely worth visiting. My fiancée and I left with wonderful memories, countless photos, and a strong desire to return and experience its beauty once again.

Cheerio!

Ugbo 2.0: Our Street Food Odyssey in Sampaloc, Manila Philippines

When we first heard whispers of FUSION ALLEY Food Park Sampaloc, famously dubbed “Ugbo 2.0,” we were in different parts of Manila—some in the University Belt, others just passing by on errands—but all of us curious about the hype. The original Ugbo in Tondo had long been a food pilgrimage for adventurous eaters and night market lovers alike, with its endless rows of stalls, grilled skewers, exotic soups, and cheeky sweet treats. Now, this spirited concept has been reimagined closer to campus life, right between P. Noval and P. Campa streets in Sampaloc, just a short walk from UST and the rest of the academic hustle. From the outset, Ugbo 2.0 felt like a celebration of Filipino street food culture—but with its own Sampaloc personality. The streets come alive as the sun dips below the Manila skyline, and the aroma of sizzling grills and sweet fruit shakes fills the late-afternoon air. The first thing that strikes us when we walk along the vendors’ lane is the diversity of offerings: fami...
