Regina RICA: A Sacred Sanctuary of Peace in the Heart of Rizal

Nestled amid the lush mountains of Tanay, Rizal, Regina RICA—short for Regina Rosarii Institute for Contemplation in Asia—stands as one of the most serene spiritual destinations in the Philippines. Known for its towering 71-foot statue of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, the sanctuary has become a pilgrimage site and a haven for those seeking peace, prayer, and a deeper connection with nature.

Established by the Dominican Sisters of Regina Rosarii, Regina RICA officially opened to the public in 2009. Since then, it has welcomed millions of visitors who come to experience its calming atmosphere, scenic landscapes, and spiritual offerings. Its location, surrounded by the verdant Sierra Madre mountain range, adds a sense of sacredness that makes the place feel worlds away from the busy city life.

One of the most iconic features of Regina RICA is the majestic Regina Rosarii statue, which sits atop the “S-Trail,” a winding pathway symbolizing the journey of faith. The statue visually dominates the landscape, with its open hands inviting pilgrims to rest their burdens and find comfort in prayer. Inside the statue is the SULOD, an upper room designed as a quiet space for contemplation. Visitors describe it as a profoundly peaceful area where the soft light, solemn ambiance, and spiritual energy help them connect deeply with their intentions.

Aside from the enormous statue, Regina RICA is known for its eco-spiritual environment. Pilgrims can enjoy scenic trails, bamboo forests, and lush gardens. The area has been intentionally preserved to maintain its natural beauty, and the sisters promote environmental care as part of their advocacy. The sanctuary also features a meditation area, flower gardens, and numerous prayer spots perfect for reflecting or simply appreciating the serenity of the surroundings.

Another highlight of Regina RICA is the Adoration Chapel called St. Mary’s E-quipu. Built with delicate woodwork and warm lighting, it provides a restful atmosphere for silent prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Many visitors describe the experience inside the chapel as deeply grounding, offering a sense of calm that is hard to find elsewhere.

For guests who want to participate in religious activities, Regina RICA holds daily masses, rosaries, and other spiritual gatherings. The Dominican Sisters also offer spiritual direction, retreats, and counseling for individuals or groups looking for guidance and renewal. Because of its dedication to both spiritual formation and environmental care, Regina RICA has become a holistic destination—balancing faith, nature, and personal well-being.

Visitors will also find simple food stalls and a souvenir shop offering religious items crafted by local communities. The sanctuary operates with a tone of simplicity and humility, encouraging modest dressing, quiet behavior, and respect toward nature and fellow pilgrims.

Whether one is a devout Catholic or simply a traveler in search of peace, Regina RICA offers an atmosphere unlike any other. Its combination of breathtaking scenery, spiritual depth, and heartfelt hospitality makes it a meaningful stop for anyone visiting Rizal.

More than just a tourist destination, Regina RICA serves as a sanctuary of prayer, healing, and reflection—a place where people from all walks of life can pause, breathe, and reconnect with what matters most.

Cheerio!

Mt. Maynuba in Tanay, Rizal: Our Couple’s Hike Through Clouds, Trails, and Eight Waterfalls

When my fiancée and I decided to take a break from the usual city routine, we found ourselves drawn to Mt. Maynuba—a mountain that isn’t the tallest in the Philippines, but one that offers a surprisingly complete hiking experience. Located in Tanay, this destination is well-known among hikers for its scenic trails, famous sea of clouds, and a unique bonus: eight waterfalls along the route. From the very start, we knew this hike would be something special—and it truly delivered. First Impressions and Getting There Coming from Metro Manila, the accessibility of Mt. Maynuba is one of its biggest advantages. It’s just a few hours away, making it perfect for a day hike or a quick weekend adventure. The jump-off point is in Barangay Cayabu, where we registered, paid the environmental fee, and secured a local guide (which is required). We immediately noticed how welcoming the locals were. The community plays a big role in maintaining the trail and guiding hikers, and that added a sense of saf...

Ugbo 2.0: Our Street Food Odyssey in Sampaloc, Manila Philippines

When we first heard whispers of FUSION ALLEY Food Park Sampaloc, famously dubbed “Ugbo 2.0,” we were in different parts of Manila—some in the University Belt, others just passing by on errands—but all of us curious about the hype. The original Ugbo in Tondo had long been a food pilgrimage for adventurous eaters and night market lovers alike, with its endless rows of stalls, grilled skewers, exotic soups, and cheeky sweet treats. Now, this spirited concept has been reimagined closer to campus life, right between P. Noval and P. Campa streets in Sampaloc, just a short walk from UST and the rest of the academic hustle. From the outset, Ugbo 2.0 felt like a celebration of Filipino street food culture—but with its own Sampaloc personality. The streets come alive as the sun dips below the Manila skyline, and the aroma of sizzling grills and sweet fruit shakes fills the late-afternoon air. The first thing that strikes us when we walk along the vendors’ lane is the diversity of offerings: fami...
