Sun, Sand, and Serenity: A Perfect Escape to Playa Laiya, Batangas Philippines

My fiancé and I have always believed that some places have a way of slowing time, allowing you to breathe deeper, laugh louder, and feel more present than ever. Playa Laiya in San Juan, Batangas turned out to be exactly that kind of place for us—a destination that quietly wraps you in calm while exciting your senses with its natural beauty and laid-back charm.

The moment we arrived in Laiya, we already felt the shift. The air seemed fresher, tinged with the subtle scent of salt and greenery. Coconut trees lined the roads, swaying gently as if welcoming us, and the sound of the waves grew louder with every step closer to the shore. It was one of those rare moments when even before seeing the beach, we already knew we were somewhere special.

Playa Laiya’s white sand beach was the first thing that truly took our breath away. The sand was fine and light, almost powdery under our feet, and it stretched endlessly along the coast. As my fiancé and I walked side by side, we found ourselves instinctively slowing down, savoring the feel of the sand and the gentle warmth of the sun. The shoreline was beautifully clean, with waves that rolled in softly, creating a calming rhythm that felt almost meditative. It wasn’t the aggressive kind of surf that demands attention—it was the kind that invites you to sit, watch, and simply be.

What made Playa Laiya even more captivating for us was its surroundings. Behind the beach, lush greenery framed the coastline, giving the area a peaceful, almost secluded atmosphere. The mountains of Batangas stood quietly in the distance, adding depth and contrast to the bright blues and whites of the sea and sand. During early mornings, my fiancé and I loved how the sunlight slowly painted the sky in soft shades of gold and pink. Evenings were just as magical, with sunsets that seemed to linger, as if reluctant to leave.

One of the things we truly appreciated about Playa Laiya was the variety of resorts that catered to different kinds of travelers, yet all managed to blend harmoniously with nature. From charming beachfront resorts to more modern accommodations, each place had its own personality while maintaining the relaxed vibe that defines Laiya. Our resort offered a clear view of the sea, and waking up to the sound of waves became our favorite part of the day. We would sit on the balcony with coffee in hand, watching the horizon, sharing quiet conversations that felt more meaningful in such a serene setting.

The resorts in Playa Laiya don’t just offer a place to sleep—they enhance the entire experience. Many feature open spaces, native-inspired designs, and amenities that encourage guests to enjoy the outdoors. My fiancé and I found ourselves spending more time outside than inside, whether it was lounging by the beach, dipping our feet into the water, or simply lying on beach chairs under the shade of palm trees. The unhurried atmosphere made us forget about schedules and deadlines; our only concern was deciding whether to swim now or later.

Playa Laiya is also perfect for couples like us who want both relaxation and a bit of adventure. We enjoyed swimming in the clear waters, which were calm enough for long, leisurely dips. At times, we would just float together, looking up at the sky, feeling completely disconnected from the noise of everyday life. For those who enjoy activities, there are options like snorkeling, kayaking, and boat rides, but what we loved most was that nothing felt forced. Everything moved at your own pace.

Another aspect that made our stay memorable was the warmth of the people. The staff at the resorts and the locals around Laiya were friendly, approachable, and genuinely welcoming. Simple interactions—smiles, casual conversations, helpful recommendations—added to the feeling that Playa Laiya wasn’t just a tourist spot but a place with heart. My fiancé and I felt comfortable and cared for, which made the experience even more special.

Food was another highlight of our time in Playa Laiya. Sharing meals by the beach felt incredibly intimate. Fresh seafood, local Filipino dishes, and simple comfort food tasted better with the sound of waves in the background. We loved how meals became moments—slow, unhurried, and filled with conversation. Watching the sky change colors as we ate dinner together is a memory we know we’ll carry with us for a long time.

As our stay came to an end, my fiancé and I realized that Playa Laiya wasn’t just about white sand beaches and beautiful resorts—though it certainly had plenty of both. It was about the feeling it gave us. It reminded us how important it is to pause, to reconnect, and to appreciate the simple joys of being together in a beautiful place. Playa Laiya gave us space to relax, to dream, and to create memories that felt genuine and lasting.

Leaving Playa Laiya was bittersweet. As we took one last look at the shore, we knew this wouldn’t be our final visit. Some places stay with you long after you’ve gone, and for us, Playa Laiya in San Juan, Batangas became one of those places—a destination we’ll always associate with calm mornings, golden sunsets, and shared moments that felt beautifully, perfectly ours.

Cheerio!

Mt. Maynuba in Tanay, Rizal: Our Couple’s Hike Through Clouds, Trails, and Eight Waterfalls

When my fiancée and I decided to take a break from the usual city routine, we found ourselves drawn to Mt. Maynuba—a mountain that isn’t the tallest in the Philippines, but one that offers a surprisingly complete hiking experience. Located in Tanay, this destination is well-known among hikers for its scenic trails, famous sea of clouds, and a unique bonus: eight waterfalls along the route. From the very start, we knew this hike would be something special—and it truly delivered. First Impressions and Getting There Coming from Metro Manila, the accessibility of Mt. Maynuba is one of its biggest advantages. It’s just a few hours away, making it perfect for a day hike or a quick weekend adventure. The jump-off point is in Barangay Cayabu, where we registered, paid the environmental fee, and secured a local guide (which is required). We immediately noticed how welcoming the locals were. The community plays a big role in maintaining the trail and guiding hikers, and that added a sense of saf...

Ugbo 2.0: Our Street Food Odyssey in Sampaloc, Manila Philippines

When we first heard whispers of FUSION ALLEY Food Park Sampaloc, famously dubbed “Ugbo 2.0,” we were in different parts of Manila—some in the University Belt, others just passing by on errands—but all of us curious about the hype. The original Ugbo in Tondo had long been a food pilgrimage for adventurous eaters and night market lovers alike, with its endless rows of stalls, grilled skewers, exotic soups, and cheeky sweet treats. Now, this spirited concept has been reimagined closer to campus life, right between P. Noval and P. Campa streets in Sampaloc, just a short walk from UST and the rest of the academic hustle. From the outset, Ugbo 2.0 felt like a celebration of Filipino street food culture—but with its own Sampaloc personality. The streets come alive as the sun dips below the Manila skyline, and the aroma of sizzling grills and sweet fruit shakes fills the late-afternoon air. The first thing that strikes us when we walk along the vendors’ lane is the diversity of offerings: fami...
