Exploring the Hidden Beauty of Calinawan Cave in Tanay, Rizal: A Perfect Adventure for Couples

A Glimpse of Calinawan Cave

There’s something magical about escaping the busy streets of the metro and finding yourself surrounded by nature—and that’s exactly what my fiancée and I experienced when we visited Calinawan Cave in Tanay, Rizal. Nestled in the lush greenery of Tanay, this cave offers not just a thrilling adventure but also a peaceful retreat into nature’s raw beauty.

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by fresh air, towering rock formations, and the calming sound of the nearby river. It felt like stepping into another world—one that’s both mysterious and incredibly serene.

Scenic Views That Take Your Breath Away

The scenic views around the cave are nothing short of stunning. Before even entering the cave, we spent time admiring the crystal-clear river flowing nearby. The water was so inviting that we couldn’t resist dipping our feet in—it was refreshingly cold and perfect after a short trek.

Surrounded by mountains and dense forest, the entire area feels untouched. The natural landscape creates a relaxing vibe that’s ideal for couples like us who want a mix of adventure and quiet bonding time. The contrast between the rugged cave interiors and the soft, flowing river outside makes the whole experience even more special.

Entrance Fees and Guided Tours

One of the best things about Calinawan Cave is how affordable it is. When we visited, there was a minimal entrance fee (usually around ₱20–₱50 per person). However, to fully enjoy and safely explore the cave, hiring a guide is highly recommended—and honestly, it made our experience much better.

Guides typically charge around ₱500 per group, and they don’t just lead the way—they also share fascinating stories about the cave’s history, including its rumored use as a hideout during World War II. Our guide pointed out unique rock formations and helped us navigate tight passages, making the adventure both safe and informative.

Activities You Can Enjoy Inside and Around the Cave

Our trip wasn’t just about sightseeing—it was packed with exciting activities:

Cave Exploration (Spelunking)

Exploring the cave itself was definitely the highlight. As we ventured deeper, the passages became narrower, requiring us to crawl, duck, and carefully step over rocks. It was thrilling, a bit challenging, and incredibly fun—especially doing it together.

River Swimming

After the cave exploration, we cooled off by the river. The water was clean and shallow in some areas, making it perfect for a quick swim or just relaxing by the banks.

Photo Opportunities

Every corner of the place is Instagram-worthy—from dramatic cave interiors to scenic riverside views. My fiancée and I couldn’t stop taking photos!

Picnic Time

We also noticed several groups enjoying picnics. Bringing your own food is a great idea if you want to stay longer and fully enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Where to Eat After the Adventure

After a day of exploring, we were definitely hungry. Fortunately, there are a few great food options nearby:

Local eateries near the jump-off point offer simple Filipino dishes like grilled meats, rice meals, and snacks.

If you’re willing to travel a bit further, you can head to Palo Alto Leisure Park Cafe for a more relaxing dining experience surrounded by nature.

Another popular option is Cafe Katerina, known for its cozy ambiance and delicious comfort food.

We personally enjoyed a simple but satisfying meal from a nearby carinderia—nothing fancy, but after an adventure like that, it tasted amazing.

How to Get to Calinawan Cave

Getting there is part of the adventure:

By Private Vehicle

From Metro Manila, we drove through Marcos Highway toward Tanay, then continued to Barangay Tandang Kutyo (near Daraitan). The roads are mostly manageable, though some parts can be rough, so drive carefully.

By Public Transportation

Ride a jeep or van going to Tanay Public Market.

From there, take a tricycle to Daraitan.

Finally, a short trek will lead you to the cave.

Travel time is roughly around 2–3 hours, depending on traffic.

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?

Absolutely—yes. For couples like us, Calinawan Cave is more than just a tourist spot. It’s an experience that brings excitement, connection, and appreciation for nature all in one trip.

Whether you’re crawling through cave tunnels, laughing over slippery rocks, or simply enjoying the peaceful river view side by side, every moment feels meaningful. It’s budget-friendly, accessible, and packed with adventure—perfect for a weekend escape.

If you’re looking for a unique bonding experience with your partner, we highly recommend adding Calinawan Cave to your travel list. It’s not just a destination—it’s a memory waiting to happen.

Cheerio!
