Above the Clouds: Our Unforgettable Adventure at Mt. Balagbag in Rodriguez, Rizal

Just a short drive from Metro Manila lies a peaceful mountain escape that feels worlds away from the city’s noise and rush. When my fiancée and I decided to spend a quiet weekend reconnecting with nature, we chose Mt. Balagbag in Rodriguez—and it turned out to be one of our most refreshing and scenic day hikes yet.

If you’re looking for a beginner-friendly hike with rewarding views, wide-open grasslands, and a relaxing atmosphere, Mt. Balagbag deserves a spot on your bucket list.

First Impressions: A Gentle Giant Near the City

Mt. Balagbag stands at around 760+ meters above sea level, making it one of the more accessible mountains in Rizal. Unlike forest-heavy trails, this mountain greets hikers with rolling hills covered in grasslands. The open landscape instantly reminded us of a mini version of Batanes—minus the long flight.

As we began our ascent, we were surprised at how manageable the trail was. There are two main ways to reach the summit: by trekking or by riding a 4x4 vehicle or motorcycle partway up. Since my fiancée and I wanted the full experience, we chose to hike.

The trail was wide and clearly established. The gradual slopes made it beginner-friendly, though the lack of tree cover meant we felt the sun’s full intensity. We recommend starting early in the morning—not just to avoid the heat, but to witness one of Mt. Balagbag’s most magical features.

Scenic Views: Sea of Clouds and City Skylines

One of the highlights of our trip was the breathtaking “sea of clouds.” As we reached a higher viewpoint, the early morning fog rolled dramatically across the valleys below. It felt like we were standing above a soft, white ocean.

From the summit, we could see panoramic views of Metro Manila, nearby Rizal mountains, and even distant peaks like Mt. Arayat on a clear day. The vastness of the view made us pause and simply take it all in. The wind was cool, steady, and calming—perfect for reflection and photos.

The grassy hills were also perfect for creative couple shots. We found several scenic spots ideal for prenup-style photos, drone shots, or simply sitting down together to appreciate the silence.

Activities You Can Do at Mt. Balagbag

While the hike itself is the main attraction, there are plenty of activities that make the trip more memorable:

1. Hiking and Nature Walks

The trail is ideal for beginners and casual hikers. My fiancée and I enjoyed a relaxed pace, stopping often to take photos and admire the views.

2. Camping

There are camping areas near the summit. We met a few groups who stayed overnight to catch both sunset and sunrise. If you love camping under the stars with cool mountain air, this is a great spot.

3. Sunrise and Sunset Watching

Sunrise is magical here. The soft golden light spreads across the hills and clouds, creating a romantic and peaceful atmosphere. Sunset is equally beautiful, painting the sky with warm hues.

4. Picnics

Because of the wide open spaces, Mt. Balagbag is perfect for a simple picnic. We brought light snacks and enjoyed them while overlooking the valley.

5. 4x4 and Off-Road Adventures

For those who prefer less walking, 4x4 rides are available. We saw groups enjoying the off-road adventure, adding a bit of thrill to their visit.

Where to Eat After the Hike

After spending hours under the sun and wind, our stomachs were definitely ready for something filling.

Near the jump-off area and along the highway in Rodriguez, you can find small local eateries and carinderias serving Filipino favorites like tapsilog, pancit, and lugaw. These are budget-friendly and satisfying after a hike.

If you’re willing to drive a little farther, nearby towns in Rizal offer more restaurant options—from grilled specialties to cozy cafés. My fiancée and I personally loved enjoying a hearty silog meal paired with iced coffee after descending. There’s something extra rewarding about eating after earning it through a hike.

Tip: Bring water and light snacks during the hike because food stalls at the summit can be limited depending on the day.

Hike Difficulty Rating

On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the hardest), we would rate Mt. Balagbag a 3/10.

Here’s why:

  • ✅ Gradual slopes
  • ✅ Wide and clear trail
  • ✅ No technical climbing required
  • ❌ Minimal shade (can be challenging under direct sun)
  • ❌ Wind can be strong near the summit

For beginners, this mountain is perfect. For experienced hikers, it’s an easy and relaxing climb—ideal for a light weekend adventure or a “recovery hike” after tackling more difficult peaks.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Before heading out, here are a few practical tips we learned:
  • Start early (5:00–6:00 AM) for sea of clouds.
  • Wear sun protection—hat, sunscreen, and long sleeves.
  • Bring enough water since there’s limited shade.
  • Check local guidelines or registration requirements.
  • Respect the environment—practice Leave No Trace.

Final Thoughts: A Perfect Couple’s Escape

Our trip to Mt. Balagbag was more than just a hike—it was a refreshing escape from busy schedules and city stress. Walking side by side through rolling hills, feeling the cool wind at the summit, and watching clouds drift below us reminded us how simple adventures can strengthen connection.

Mt. Balagbag may not be the tallest or most challenging mountain in the Philippines, but its charm lies in its accessibility and panoramic beauty. Whether you’re a beginner looking for your first summit, a couple seeking a romantic sunrise spot, or a group of friends wanting a quick outdoor getaway, this mountain delivers.

For us, it was a peaceful, scenic, and rewarding experience—and one we would gladly do again.

If you’re planning your next weekend hike near Metro Manila, Mt. Balagbag might just be the gentle giant waiting for you above the clouds.

Cheerio!

Located in Tanay, this destination is well-known among hikers for its scenic trails, famous sea of clouds, and a unique bonus: eight waterfalls along the route. From the very start, we knew this hike would be something special—and it truly delivered. First Impressions and Getting There Coming from Metro Manila, the accessibility of Mt. Ugbo 2.0: Our Street Food Odyssey in Sampaloc, Manila Philippines

When we first heard whispers of FUSION ALLEY Food Park Sampaloc, famously dubbed “Ugbo 2.0,” we were in different parts of Manila—some in the University Belt, others just passing by on errands—but all of us curious about the hype. The original Ugbo in Tondo had long been a food pilgrimage for adventurous eaters and night market lovers alike, with its endless rows of stalls, grilled skewers, exotic soups, and cheeky sweet treats. Now, this spirited concept has been reimagined closer to campus life, right between P. Noval and P. Campa streets in Sampaloc, just a short walk from UST and the rest of the academic hustle. From the outset, Ugbo 2.0 felt like a celebration of Filipino street food culture—but with its own Sampaloc personality. The streets come alive as the sun dips below the Manila skyline, and the aroma of sizzling grills and sweet fruit shakes fills the late-afternoon air. The first thing that strikes us when we walk along the vendors’ lane is the diversity of offerings: fami...
