A Breath of the Wild: My Journey to Mount Purro Nature Reserve in Antipolo, Rizal Philippines

Just a couple of hours away from the constant hum of Metro Manila lies a pocket of peace that feels worlds apart—Mount Purro Nature Reserve in Antipolo, Rizal. From the moment our vehicle climbed the winding road framed by tall trees and mountain air, I felt the pace of life slow down. It was as if the noise, deadlines, and digital overload were gently peeled away with every mile closer to the reserve. What awaited us was not simply a destination, but an experience wrapped in nature, community, and quiet reflection.

Arriving at Mount Purro felt like stepping into a tropical sanctuary. The entrance greeted us with warm smiles from the staff, whose genuine hospitality instantly made us feel welcome. They explained how the reserve was built not only to preserve the environment but also to empower the surrounding communities—an intention that gave deeper meaning to everything we were about to witness. Rather than a commercial resort, Mount Purro felt like a living, breathing space dedicated to sustainability and human connection.

Our first activity was a scenic trek along forest trails where sunlight danced through bamboo groves and towering hardwood trees. The air smelled of damp soil and fresh leaves—an aroma impossible to bottle and unforgettable once experienced. Bird calls echoed overhead as colorful butterflies fluttered past, seemingly unbothered by our quiet footsteps. Every bend of the trail offered new beauty—small waterfalls cascading into clear streams, moss-clad rocks perfect for a short rest, and panoramic views of rolling hills stretching toward the horizon.

One of the most striking moments was crossing a modest hanging bridge built over flowing water. It swayed gently beneath our steps, adding an edge of adventure to the tranquil surroundings. Standing in the center of the bridge, pausing to look in every direction, I realized how rare it is to feel so immersed in nature—untethered from screens, schedules, and distractions. It reminded me that adventure does not always require extreme thrills; sometimes, it comes from quiet discoveries and shared moments.

After our trek, we gathered near the communal area where a simple but hearty Filipino lunch was served. Freshly prepared dishes using locally sourced ingredients tasted exceptional against the backdrop of chirping birds and rustling leaves. Sitting at long wooden tables with fellow visitors created a sense of family, even among strangers. Conversations flowed easily, fueled by collective awe for the place and appreciation for the peaceful escape Mount Purro provided.

The reserve’s commitment to eco-tourism became more apparent as we explored its modest accommodations. Cozy cabins crafted from sustainable materials blended seamlessly into the landscape, emphasizing harmony rather than dominance over the environment. Visitors were encouraged to practice mindful tourism—waste reduction, respectful exploration, and appreciation for local culture. It didn’t feel restrictive; rather, it empowered us to become more conscious travelers.

As the afternoon light softened into golden hues, we found a quiet spot overlooking a wide valley. The stillness was almost meditative. In that moment, it wasn’t about snapping photos or documenting every detail—it was about simply being present. I reflected on how places like Mount Purro remind us of what truly matters: connection with nature, gratitude for simplicity, and support for communities working to protect their heritage.

Leaving the reserve was bittersweet. While we returned to the city physically tired from trekking, our minds felt renewed. Mount Purro Nature Reserve proved to be more than a scenic getaway; it was a healing retreat. It gently reminded me that when we allow ourselves to step away—even briefly—from modern chaos and into the heart of nature, we rediscover clarity, peace, and wonder.

Mount Purro is not just a destination to visit; it is a place to experience, to slow down, and to remember the beauty that surrounds us—if only we choose to seek it.

Cheerio!

When my fiancée and I decided to take a break from the usual city routine, we found ourselves drawn to Mt. Maynuba—a mountain that isn’t the tallest in the Philippines, but one that offers a surprisingly complete hiking experience. Located in Tanay, this destination is well-known among hikers for its scenic trails, famous sea of clouds, and a unique bonus: eight waterfalls along the route. From the very start, we knew this hike would be something special—and it truly delivered. First Impressions and Getting There Coming from Metro Manila, the accessibility of Mt. Maynuba is one of its biggest advantages. It’s just a few hours away, making it perfect for a day hike or a quick weekend adventure. The jump-off point is in Barangay Cayabu, where we registered, paid the environmental fee, and secured a local guide (which is required). We immediately noticed how welcoming the locals were. The community plays a big role in maintaining the trail and guiding hikers, and that added a sense of saf...

Ugbo 2.0: Our Street Food Odyssey in Sampaloc, Manila Philippines

When we first heard whispers of FUSION ALLEY Food Park Sampaloc, famously dubbed “Ugbo 2.0,” we were in different parts of Manila—some in the University Belt, others just passing by on errands—but all of us curious about the hype. The original Ugbo in Tondo had long been a food pilgrimage for adventurous eaters and night market lovers alike, with its endless rows of stalls, grilled skewers, exotic soups, and cheeky sweet treats. Now, this spirited concept has been reimagined closer to campus life, right between P. Noval and P. Campa streets in Sampaloc, just a short walk from UST and the rest of the academic hustle. From the outset, Ugbo 2.0 felt like a celebration of Filipino street food culture—but with its own Sampaloc personality. The streets come alive as the sun dips below the Manila skyline, and the aroma of sizzling grills and sweet fruit shakes fills the late-afternoon air. The first thing that strikes us when we walk along the vendors’ lane is the diversity of offerings: fami...
